Abstract:
THE ADYGHE (CIRCASSIAN) DIASPORA TODAY
Adyghes (Circassians) in the Caucasus, one of the most ancient peoples, were sent to the land of the Ottoman Empire after losing their fight against Tsarist Russia in 1864. Circassians who have been living far from their motherland for more than one hundered fifty years have been scattered all over the world. Adyghe community in the Ottoman period have continued to be affected by the wars and have been forced to change places again and again in the Ottoman territory. Even today, Adyghes who live in the Middle East continue to be affected by the wars.
As in the past, Adyghe population in diaspora and their social life are interesting topics for many researchers today. The fact that Adyghe language and Adyghe people as ancient entities can provide significant insights into history is a sufficient reason to investigate the linguistic, social and cultural structures of the this society. However, the ongoing displacements and changing demographic structures make it difficult to estimate the population distribution of Circassians who live dispersed in the world. Moreover, this dispersion makes it hard to preserve and revitalize Circassian language too. In this study, it is aimed to develop a guide to the distribution and density of Circassians in the world based on general estimates.
Keywords: adyghe, circassian, diaspora, population, distribution.
